AdBlue, which replaces the ZDEC brand at Z truck stops and is already at Caltex truck stops, is used in vehicles with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology. A growing number of manufacturers are employing this technology to help their modern trucks, buses and other diesel vehicles to meet stringent Euro 4, Euro 5 and Euro 6 emission standards.
There are four regulated pollutants covered by Euro standards – nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and fine particles (PM).
AdBlue is kept in a separate tank in each vehicle and added to the engine exhaust gas after combustion has occurred. It is not a fuel additive and must not be put directly into a diesel tank as this can seriously damage the vehicle.
Why should you consider upgrading your vehicles?
Businesses are always looking for ways to save money and increasingly our customers are telling us that they’re also looking for ways to curb their emissions. While we wait for electric and hydrogen technology to arrive, we need to do what we can right now, which means more businesses are investing in diesel vehicles that use SCR technology. And it’s easy to see why: in the commercial trucking industry, some operators report reductions of regulated emissions – especially for NO2 and NOx – of up to 90% compared with non-SCR vehicles*.
Where can you get it?
We want to make it even easier for our customers to find and use AdBlue, so it’s now being sold across the Z and Caltex truck-stop network, with AdBlue sites expanding to almost 50 in the coming months, making it New Zealand’s largest DEF network.
If your diesel vehicle doesn’t have a separate tank for AdBlue, then you don’t need it, but SCR-equipped vehicles simply won’t start without DEF. (If you accidentally put AdBlue in the diesel tank or diesel into your AdBlue tank, don’t start the vehicle). Running out can also lead to significant engine repair costs, so it’s a good idea to know where your nearest AdBlue location is (or visit locator.z.co.nz to see our network of truck stops).
You can also buy Air1 AdBlue brand 10-litre packs at some Z and Caltex retail sites to use as handy backups.
So if you’re a business looking to reduce harmful emissions from your diesel vehicles AND save money, look for ‘AdBlue’ at your local Z station.
